2012 Young Composer Competition
Call for Submissions

The Berkeley Community Chorus & Orchestra (BCCO) announces a Young Composer Competition. Its purpose is to encourage outstanding young composers in the U.S. and to provide a forum for their recognition.
BCCO is a non-auditioned chorus of over 200 voices that has performed choral masterworks for over forty-five years.
Award and Performance
The judging panel includes composer John Adams as honorary chair; conductor and former director of Cal Performances Robert Cole; composer Gabriela Lena Frank; UC Berkeley professor Ken Ueno; BCCO member Christian Fritze; and BCCO music director Ming Luke.
Up to three finalists will have their scores performed during the Spring 2013 concert season and will receive a CD of the performance. Each finalist will receive a prize of $500 and travel funds to participate in a rehearsal of his/her work. The winning composer will receive an additional prize of $500 (for a total of $1,000), and his/her composition will be featured in the Spring 2014 concert series.
Eligibility
All composers who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents born after May 1, 1972
Submission Guidelines
Works should be written for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra.
Compositions should be appropriate for a non-auditioned chorus to perform.
Works must be no more than ten (10) minutes in duration.
Instruments may include the following: two flutes (piccolo), two clarinets (bass clarinet), two oboes (English horn), two bassoons, two French horns, two trumpets, single percussion, timpani, keyboard, violin, viola, cello, bass. The string performing count will be maximum 6/5/5/4/2.
Acoustic works that utilize electronic/computer accompaniment are acceptable.
All music must be unpublished.
Materials and scores will not be returned.
BCCO is not responsible for lost or damaged material.
Interested composers must submit:
three (3) copies of a legible, bound, full score
a recording of the piece on a CD, if possible (MIDI acceptable)
a biography or CV, with current address, email address, and phone number
