University of Nebraska at Kearney New Music Festival XVII

The University of Nebraska at Kearney is excited to announce its New Music Festival XVII, being held on March 9-10, 2018 on the UNK campus in Kearney, Nebraska. Deadline for receipt is Monday, October 23, 2017.

Call for Scores: Composers are invited to submit one score of no more than 12 minutes in duration. Works involving electronics (up to 4 channels and a subwoofer), graphic notation, and open instrumentation are welcome. There are three categories for submission:

Category 1: We are very excited to welcome Amanda DeBoer Bartlett ( as our guest artist. Ms. DeBoer is an Omaha-based classical soprano who specializes in the work of living composers. Along with her solo repertoire, she is a member of Ensemble Dal Niente, Hasco Duo, and Quince Contemporary Vocal Ensemble. She will give a solo performance on Saturday, March 10 at 7:30. Composers may submit scores for the following:

• Solo unaccompanied soprano
• Solo soprano with electronics and/or found objects

Category 2: UNK Faculty and Student Performers. Solo and chamber scores for subsets of the following instruments and voices:

UNK Faculty: Oboe, Clarinet/Bass Clarinet (one performer), Trumpet, Euphonium, Tuba/Electronics (one performer), Percussion (2), Violoncello, Mezzo-Soprano voice, Baritone voice.

UNK Students (all undergraduates): Flute, Oboe, Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, Saxophone (S/A/T/B, one performer), Trumpet (2), Horn, Trombone, Euphonium/Tuba, Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello (2), Guitar (2 performers, either electric or classical)

Category 3: Solo and Chamber works where the composer provides the performer(s) or is the performer. This includes fixed media pieces as well.

Submission Guidelines: In an email to, provide the following:

1. A link to a cloud-sharing service (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) that contains:
a. One (1) PDF score of your piece.
b. A recording of your piece (a live recording is preferred, MIDI is acceptable).
c. An information sheet (.doc file preferred) with your e-mail address, short (200 words or less) bio, program notes (if acceptable), and any technical considerations.
2. Please format the subject of your email in the following manner: Last Name – First Name – Title of Piece – Category (1, 2, or 3).

We are also accepting proposals for Composer Conversations. Composers are invited to submit, along with their score, recording, and information sheet, one proposal for a 20-minute discussion related to any aspect of composition. Up to 3 proposals will be accepted, and the accepted composers will be expected to lead the discussion on the Saturday of the festival.
