Vox Novus is calling for one-minute pieces composed for Fifteen Minutes of Fame: Thomas Piercy, clarinet & Claudine Hickman, piano to be performed on the April 8, 2012 Composer's Voice concert in New York City.

The theme of this Fifteen Minutes of Fame call is Japan. The Japanese theme could include pieces inspired by Japanese musical or visual art works (either traditional or contemporary), short arrangements of Japanese pieces, or pieces using technical elements found in Japanese music. New works by Japanese composers are also welcome; however, works will be judged on their artistic merits and not on the nationality of the composer.

The one-minute duos for clarinet and piano are to be written specifically for this project and dedicated to the performers Thomas Piercy - clarinet and Claudine Hickman - piano.

Pieces should be for Bb clarinet and piano.

No solos will be considered.

All works must be 60 seconds or less.

Extended techniques for piano and clarinet are welcome. "New Directions for Clarinet" by Phillip Rehfeldt is a good, standard reference choice for extended clarinet usage. There are also many online resources for extended technique advice and notation. Any questions about the composer's intent involving extended techniques will be contacted by the performers to clarify.

Submission guidelines:
-Submission Deadline: February 1, 2012
-Works written for duet of Bb clarinet and piano
-No solos.
-Works must be submitted as a PDF file with a picture of the composer, 50-word biography, and 50-word program note about the piece.
-Do not submit sound files
-Works must be realistically performed in one minute or less in length. No works over a minute will be reviewed.
-Works need to be submitted via email to: composersvoicesubmit@gmail.com -The subject line should read - 15-Minutes-of-Fame: Piercy-Hickman- Composer Name - Composition Title
-The 50-word biography and 50 word program notes must be pasted as text in the body of the email. Please do not send these as attachments.
-The composer's picture must be attached as a jpg file.
-The score must be attached as a pdf. (performance notes should be included with the score.)
-Include the dedication to Thomas Piercy & Claudine Hickman on the score
-Works should be composed specifically for this project and its performers. All pieces must be premieres and not previously written or performed.

No works over a minute will be reviewed. Multiple submissions are discouraged. Send your best work! The results will be announced by March 1, 2012 on the Vox Novus website, and composers of the 15 accepted works will be notified by email.

Claudine Hickman (New York City), began her piano study at an early age with her father, Thames Hickman, a student of Rosina Lhevinne at the Juilliard School. Claudine went on to study on full scholarship in the Honors Program at the Mannes College of Music Preparatory Division with Arkady Aronov and Edward Aldwell. She holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music.
Ms. Hickman's performances have been described by critics as "practically telepathic, emotionally rich" "bright yet haunting precision" and "vivid, Brubeck-esque melodicism". Her passion for the music of composer Astor Piazzolla has led to her frequent collaboration with clarinetist Thomas Piercy and bassist/Latin Grammy nominee Pablo Aslan.

Thomas Piercy is a critically acclaimed musician with appearances throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. His performances have been described by critics as "passionate," "pulling out all the stops," by the New York Times as “brilliant,” “playing with refinement and flair” and “evoking a panache in the contemporary works.” A versatile artist - the clarinetist on the Emmy Award-winning Juno Baby CDs and DVDs; performing Mozart with mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade; playing Broadway songs with Raoul Julia; working with the composer Leonard Bernstein; appearing in a KRS-ONE rap music video; performing concert improvisations with pianist Donal Fox; recording with members of Maroon 5 - he has performed and recorded for Broadway and Off-Broadway, commercial recordings, television, radio, videos, and movie soundtracks.
