RULES AND REGULATIONS
1.) The competition is open to all living composers. To submit a work, applicants must first obtain permission from their respective librettist/lyricist. Once granted, composers may submit the work to its appropriate category. For the 2011 AmericanaFest, composers may enter an unlimited number of compositions per category. Previous winners are welcome to re-apply but must submit a new composition. Persons affiliated with the Boston Metro Opera - including panelists, relatives, staff composers, current and former employees, etc. - are not eligible to compete.
2.) Scores must be submitted in their entirety. Scenes and songs from larger works will not be considered. Compositions, which have already been considered by the Boston Metro Opera for inclusion in the festival may not be re-submitted. Works, which are or will be entered in another competition within the state of Massachusetts prior to May of 2011 are ineligible. Scores, which are or will be published prior to May of 2011 are likewise ineligible.
3.) A panel of opera professionals and new music specialists will review these submissions and make repertory decisions for each category. To facilitate the adjudication process, please outline which scenes (if an opera), songs (if a cycle), or sections (if an individual song or chorale) you feel best represents the work as a whole, and these portions will be played during the screening process. Otherwise, scenes, songs, and sections will be chosen at random by the panel. Boston Metro Opera reserves the right to cast a singer of any voice type in a role/song written for a specific Fach. As stated in the Standard Release, the panel is not obligated to program selections in every category nor does a submission guarantee a performance. The Boston Metro Opera will announce repertory decisions via this website.
4.) For the 2011 AmericanaFestival, each submission must be accompanied by an application form, signed/witnessed/dated Standard Release, and $10.00 processing fee (non-refundable). Works submitted without these materials will not be considered. Composers who apply by postal mail may download the required forms at americanafest.bostonmetroopera/downloads.html and pay the processing fee by a check/money order made out to Boston Metro Opera, Inc. Composers who apply online must submit these materials during the online application process. Please take note: the processing fee must be equal to the total number of works submitted (i.e. 1 work = $10.00, 2 works=$20.00, 3 works=$30.00, etc.).
5.) Those works selected will receive a performance at the festival in May.
6.) Scores and other materials should be submitted online at americanafest.bostonmetroopera.com, as e-mail attachments sent to americanafest@bostonmetroopera.com, via a data disc, or in hard copy.
7.) All compositions submitted in hard copy must be unbound. The only exceptions are hand-written scores.
8.) Hand-written scores should be submitted only if a print-version is not readily available. Hand-written scores may be bound and must be legible. All other materials must be submitted as typed or print-faced documents.
9.) Scores and other materials must be submitted using the same method. Please do not submit scores online, materials by postal mail, or vice versa.
10.) Packages submitted by postal mail should be addressed to:
David Walther
Festival Director
Boston Metro Opera

11.) Please do not enclose self-addressed, stamped envelopes, as scores and materials will not be returned. Envelopes submitted for this purpose will be discarded.
12.) For online, e-mail, and data disc submissions, scores and documents must be in PDF format, headshots must be in JPEG format, and audio files must be in MP3 or WMA format. Online, e-mail, and data disc applicants should not include multiple copies of the score and must make sure that all files are free of viruses and spyware. Last year, these conveniences destroyed a company computer. Composers should also make sure that all files submitted electronically open on all computers.
13.) All packages must be received before 9:00 PM EST on October 15, 2010.
14.) Early application is strongly encouraged. Late packages will be considered at the discretion of the panel. Only complete packages will be considered. No exceptions.
15.) After you have submitted your application, you will receive an e-mail to a) confirm receipt of your materials and b) inform you whether or not the application is complete. If you do not receive this e-mail within 2-3 days (for online submissions) or within 1-2 weeks (for postal mail submissions), please contact us for further assistance.
