1st Annual Volta Trio Composition Competition

The Volta Trio, a percussion group based in Rochester, NY, is pleased to announce a call for scores for its 1st Annual 2010 Composition Prize.

The 2010 Volta Trio Composition Competition is open to acoustic or electroacoustic compositions for percussion trio. The winning composition of the 2010 Volta Trio Composition Prize will be performed on the Volta Trio’s 2010-2011 concert season and recorded on The Volta Trio’s upcoming CD, scheduled to release in Summer 2010. The winning composer will receive a cash award of 500.00 USD.

Composers of all ages and nationalities are encouraged to apply. There is a 20.00 USD entry fee, payable by either personal check or money order (made payable to: The Volta Trio).

The members of the Volta Trio will evaluate all submissions anonymously and select the winning entry.

All applications must be complete and received by April 30th, 2010. The winning entry will be announced by May 15, 2010.

Please include the following in your submission package:

A sealed envelope containing a completed application entry form and your current biography or CV
One legible copy of the entry work, in full score.
One CD or DVD of the submission piece.
A self-addressed, stamped envelope, if you wish for your work to be returned.
Proof of permission to use any texts in the entry work, or proof that the texts used in the entry work are in the public domain (where applicable).
Performance history of the work (where applicable).

RULES AND GUIDELINES:

The work must not exceed fifteen minutes in duration.
Electronics may be for fixed media or involve any kind of performance or real-time realization.
Multichannel works will have a maximum 6.1 hexagonal configuration with Mackie 824s, or 2.1 with Mackie 1530s.
Available software includes Max/MSP 5 (or 4.5), PD, Supercollider, CSound, Cubase 5, Ardour, and others.
Electroacoustic submissions should include both a stereo mix of the electronics on a CD and performance materials for the electronics part on CD or DVD.
The instrumentation must be for three percussionists. No other instrumentalists shall be included in the piece.
Only one entry per composer will be accepted.
Works may have been performed previously. Please include performance history with your submission.
No information that indicates or suggests the name or affiliation of the composer can appear anywhere on the entry.
All entries must be submitted by post. Hand-delivered entries will not be accepted.
All entries must be received by April 30th, 2010, regardless of postmark.
Submissions that are incomplete or that do not conform to all of the aforementioned rules and guidelines will not be considered under any circumstance.
A jointly written work will be considered a single entry. If the winning work has been written jointly, the prize money will be paid in equal shares to all authors.
The decision of the Volta Trio will be final. The Volta Trio reserves the right to decline to award a prize.
Selected composer is encouraged to attend the performance, but attendance is not required. The Volta Trio will not be responsible for any travel or boarding expenses.
