2010 Alba International Composition Masterclass Indiana University East and St. Mary’s College of Maryland present the 2010 Alba International Composition Masterclass. This course is a part of the Alba International Music Festival, a two-week long music festival of concerts in Alba, Italy. Alba is a small and picturesque city located in Italy’s wonderfully rich Piedmont region. The music festival features world-renowned artists and ensembles working side-by-side with talented students. Composition students accepted to the Alba composition program will work intensively with a distinguished resident faculty along with guest composers from the United States and Europe. Resident faculty includes Elliott Miles McKinley (Indiana University East, USA) and David From (St. Mary’s College of Maryland, USA). Guest composers for 2010 include Peter R. Farmer (USA) and Christopher Muscat (Malta). Program Features: Students will participate in daily masterclasses with resident and guest composers as well as receive private composition instruction with the resident composition faculty. While in Alba, each student will compose short solo/duo works for seminar readings by select members of the Alba festival faculty. Students will be given free access to all of festival events including rehearsals, music masterclasses, clinics, and seminars. Program Cost: The 2010 program fee is $2695 and includes round-trip airfare from the east coast (travel arrangements from other locations may be made—contact for more information), local transportation in Italy, housing, board (2 meals daily), masterclass tuition, and entrance fees associated with Alba festival events. College Credit Option Through Indiana University: For an additional fee students may earn upper-lever college credit in music through Indiana University. The concurrent course is titled MUS-K415 Composition Seminar and is scheduled for the 2010 Summer I term in the Indiana University East catalog.
Eligibility/Guidelines: The program is open to composers of any nationality who are currently engaged in composition study either privately or in an established program. While there is no set age restriction, this program is best suited to those in the early stages of their career with at least some formal training in composition. The class size will be limited to preserve the quality of instruction and, as a result, a maximum of ten students will be admitted to the program.
Submission Materials: Please send the following materials by email or postal mail: (1) A short letter of application expressing your desire to participate in the program. (2) One or two sample compositions, with a recording (or a link to an online recording/MP3) if possible. Each score and each recording should be labeled with your name, address, and other contact information. If applying by email, please send the scores in PDF format. If applying by postal-mail please send copies of your scores and recordings only; Alba cannot be responsible for lost or damaged materials. (3) A brief C.V. or Resume outlining past and current educational and compositional experience. Deadline: February 15, 2010 (postmark or email receipt). Please send applications to:
