Previous First Prize winners will not be eligible.

1. The competition is open to all NACUSA members who are American citizens or
residents, who have reached their 18th birthday but have not yet reached their 32nd birthday by the submission deadline.

Composer's Night - Reno Pops Orchestra

Composers, students, and community members are encouraged to submit original compositions written for a full symphonic pops orchestra. The deadline for submissions is August 20th, 2018.

Applicants are encouraged to consider one of the following themes in their submission:
Superheroes
A Charles Dickens Christmas
Islands
Man and Machine

Full symphonic instrumentation is preferred. Finalists will be notified in early September 2018 and requested to send orchestra parts for the final screening.

We are looking for one or two contemporary pieces to feature in late October/early November at Westerbeck Recital Hall in Pasadena, CA. They can be either solos or duets and should feature soprano, mezzo, and/or baritone voice(s). Our group is made up of people from all backgrounds, both culturally and musically. All topics will be considered, but we are especially interested in sharing stories from underrepresented groups.

The winning piece(s) will be performed in Westerbeck Recital Hall and a live recording will be sent to you.

BACKGROUND

ICEBERG New Music is pleased to announce their inaugural young composer awards! Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in 2019 to deserving pre-collegiate student composers from historically underrepresented backgrounds. The selected composers will also receive free lessons and feedback from ICEBERG member composers, and may be invited to participate in a recorded reading of their work with one of ICEBERG's 2018-19 partner ensembles.

A Hymn for Mercy 2018 - a new piece for Pentecost

Composers who are 21 years of age or under are invited to submit a new piece for Pentecost, suitable for upper voices. The piece can be for unison, SA or SSA choir, or for choir and congregation. The accompaniment may be piano and/or organ, or may be unaccompanied. Composers, if they wish, may include parts for a C instrument.

The piece may be a hymn, psalm or motet. Hymn settings may be responsorial or strophic or another form suitable for the liturgy.
